Gender Analysis of Land

Project Status: Completed

Long standing research by Jackson on poverty and Rao on land have contributed to shifting thinking that has informed public and policy debates in these fields. While Jackson has pointed to the gendered natured of poverty and wellbeing and the need to take account of women’s and men’s work and vulnerabilities in any analysis of poverty, Rao has emphasised that land is not just a productive asset and a source of material wealth, but equally a source of security, status and recognition, that having different meanings for mean and women, She has demonstrated that empowerment of women can best be achieved by broadening the definition of resources to include those beyond land.
